This double-sided sign is a nice example of 1960s Bell Telephone design,
bold, clean lettering set against a striking black background with white text.
Its double-sided construction ensured visibility from multiple angles,
while internal illumination made it a standout fixture both day and night.
Directional arrows added a practical touch, guiding people to essential communication points.
Originally lit with traditional lighting, the sign has since been retrofitted with energy-efficient LEDs,
preserving its iconic glow for modern times.
This particular sign once hung inside the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Headquarters at 90 Harbour Street in Toronto. The building became the OPP’s home in 1973 and served as its headquarters until 1995,
when operations relocated to a new facility at 777 Memorial Avenue in Orillia.
Before the Harbour Street building was vacated, a Bell Telephone employee removed the sign and kept it,
preserving a piece of history that might otherwise have been lost.
